How it plays out on a deal
Sellers redact to share enough for diligence without exposing what a competitor or an early-stage bidder should not see. Done badly, redaction is just a black box drawn over text that can still be copied out underneath, which is worse than not redacting at all.
A native redaction tool inside the room saves exporting files to a desktop editor and back. The questions to ask are whether the underlying text is truly removed, whether the original stays available to authorized users, and whether the tool can find recurring terms such as a customer name across many files.
What to check in a review or demo
- 1Whether redacted text can still be selected, searched or copied in the shared file.
- 2Whether the unredacted original stays available to a restricted group, such as a clean team.
- 3Whether the tool can find and redact a term across a whole folder in one pass.
Redaction: where the reviewed providers stand
